Division can be very difficult to learn, but this simple game provides a visual representation of this often very abstract process. As children proceed through the steps required to work out problems, they will find their skills strengthening and their speed increasing.
What this activity will develop:
Math, thinking and social skills
What you'll need:
• 11 egg cartons
• Cardboard base, 22" x 22"
• 110 beans
• White glue
• Index cards
• Small zip lock bag
What to do:
1. Cut the lids off the egg cartons.
2. Cut one egg carton in half lengthwise.
3. Cut two cups off the ends of five egg cartons.
4. Glue the egg cartons to the base in rows, 11 cups across and 11 cups down.
5. Number the cartons as illustrated.
6. Write division problems on index cards. Store cards and beans in zip lock bag.
Rules of play:
1. Read one division problem card. Example: 37 divided by 6 = 6, remainder 1
