Q

I have a two-year-old son. He's been potty trained for about two months, but has been having accidents during the night for a couple of weeks. He usually comes into my bed during the night and is dry. After he falls asleep again he then has an accident. I'm wondering if it's because we just moved (about three weeks ago). What can my husband and I do to get him back on track?

A

It is not uncommon for children who toilet train at a very early age to have accidents at night. Their bodies and minds have often not yet developed enough to control the impulse to urinate when they are sleeping or semi-awake. This is actually harder to do than using the potty during the day.

It's possible that your son is bothered by his new surroundings. Two year-olds generally adjust to new surroundings fairly rapidly. More likely, it is just the developing maturity of his nervous system.

If you can, when your son comes into your room at night, you should use this time to put him on the potty. Often, one trip to the bathroom during the night will solve the problem.

If this method does not work, you have two additional choices. You can put your son back into diapers "for the nighttime only," or you can change the sheets every morning and wait for his body to mature. This alternative is harder because it requires patience and the ability to NOT get angry each morning. If you can manage it, however, it may be a good confidence builder for your son.

The main thing to remember is that your child will eventually be completely trained, just like everybody else.
