This feeder is versatile and refillable.

Materials and Tools

  • Bird seed
  • Grapefruit or large orange
  • Ice pick (adults need to assist)
  • Knife (adults need to assist)
  • Lunch bags, paper
  • Pencil or dowel
  • Pinecones, large
  • Seeds, berries and tiny pieces of fruit
  • String

Directions

  1. Cut a grapefruit or large orange in half and remove fruit.
  2. Poke three small holes around upper edge of skin, as evenly spaced as possible.
  3. Tie string though each hole and join together at the top.
  4. Poke a pencil or dowel through any two places in the skin, to provide a perch for feeders.
  5. Tie to tree branch.
  6. Fill with seeds, berries and tiny pieces of fruit.
  7. Refill as needed.
  8. Take notes as to favorite foods.
  9. Take photos of visiting birds for your Nature Notebook.
