My oldest daughter was born in the hospital. I had admitted at 6pm with ruptured membranes, but no sign of labor. At about 1am contractions came on hard and fast, but the monitor said they weren't as strong as I was perceiving them to be. By 4:30am I was hysterical. The nurse came in and checked me, said I was only 4cm dilated and that it was going to be awhile. She advised me to take demerol/vistaril or I would hurt the baby. Even though I had wanted a natural childbirth; being young (19) and having my first baby, I agreed.

Well, regardless of what my cervix was saying, I was in transition. No sooner had she given me the shot and walked out of the room, I turned to my then husband Bill, and said get the nurse, the baby is coming out. Sure enough, I had gone from 4cm to complete and delivery in 10 minutes. Kyra was born in secondary apnea (she was depressed from the medication, and never took her first breath), was rushed to ICU, and given an anti-narcotic drug.
