I am in my 29th week and for the past few days I can't stay asleep. I will sleep for about three hours. My doctor told me that since this is stressing me, to take Benadryl to break the cycle. Is insomnia normal during pregnancy and is it safe to take Benadryl once or twice a week, if needed?
Although sleep disturbance is commonly reported in pregnancy, there have been few studies on sleep characteristics in pregnancy.
In one study, 88 percent of the participants stated that sleep was altered from their usual experience. Sleep duration and quality, insomnia and daytime alertness were all affected. No significant differences across trimesters were found on the three sleep factors, but sleep duration and quality, and insomnia were worst during the first trimester. Sleep normalized in the second trimester, but the third trimester was characterized by increased insomnia and decreased daytime alertness.
There are many reasons for sleep disturbances in pregnancy, especially in the third trimester -- urinary frequency, heartburn, backache or ache in the hips and increased fetal movement all disturb sleep.
The third trimester is one of the most "volatile" in the pregnancy in terms of diminished body image, anxiety, discomfort, partner anxiety and doubts. For women who are normally organized and energetic, the adaptation to the unexpected nature of pregnancy and labor, the shear volume of things to be prepared and organized and adjustment to the differences in the marital relationship require great stamina and understanding of self and others. It can simply wear you down and create great anxiety. It is a wonder that you can get any rest at all!
In one study I read on emotional adjustment during pregnancy, level of exchanged affection reported by wives is associated with lower levels of symptoms of anxiety and insomnia. I guess that points out that we can get through almost anything with enough love and support.
As far as a sleep aid, some women prefer to use Unisom over Benadryl during pregnancy. I wish you the best and hope you can get some sleep.
