Q

I have noticed that when I pump my breasts after I have taken my multivitamin, the milk tends to be quite yellow, almost greenish in hue. When I pump at other times my milk is very white. Is it safe to feed my baby this green milk?

A

It is not unusual for breastmilk to take on a greenish (or other) color.

Changes in the color of your milk are usually related to your diet, herbal remedies, or medications you are taking. Naturally occurring or man-made pigments in your diet can tint your milk. Vitamins or supplements that contain kelp or other forms of seaweed have been reported to cause green milk. Green gatorade can also give your milk a green hue. (Ruth Lawrence, MD, 1994)

Since you have noticed that your expressed milk is sometimes white, but after taking your vitamin, appears green in color, I think it is likely that your vitamin is tinting your milk. If this is the case, it is nothing to worry about. Best wishes!
